The Democratic Party has been slowly splintering for the last several years. The divide between Leftists and old-school, common-sense Liberals such as Bari Weiss grows by the day. Has that divide finally become unbridgeable? What will common-sense Liberals do in the midterm elections this November?
Last week on The Socrates Finch Show, I covered the news that the uber-left city of San Francisco voted out their woke district attorney—by a whopping sixty percent. I’ve always tried to not rely too heavily on polls for gauging public opinion—especially after the unmitigated disaster that was the 2020 presidential election polls—so this was the first real sign to me that the prophesized red wave of Republican voters in the midterm elections might actually come about. I still am fairly unsure, but this vote has given me more hope for the midterms than anything else this year—especially considering the recall practically came on the eve of the widely promoted, widely partisan witch-hunt that is the Jan. 6 Committee Hearings, which the Democrats running it hope will solidify their base.
What was particularly interesting to me was the Left’s reaction to this tumultuous news. When they could (and should) have firstly accepted that it appeared that their common constituents had begun to turn against them, and then secondly figured out what they would need to change in time for the midterms, Leftists instead went into denial mode. One prominent New York Magazine writer wrote that San Fran, “has never been its left-wing caricature.” A policy analyst went even further, claiming that the city “has always been a conservative city.”
Clearly, the Left has no interest in course correcting in the slightest. But will this attitude lose them their common-sense liberal voting block? Certainly, one or two high-profile liberals, such as Elon Musk, have already announced that they will be voting Republican. Will many common-sense liberals switch-parties? I rather doubt it. However, it is not out of the realm of possibility that a significant number of common-sense liberals, being essentially politically homeless during the midterms, will simply stay home and not vote. This in itself, I would wager, could deal some serious damage to the Democrats in November.
America Forever,
