The Leftist Tactic of Ignoring Opposition
(Over the last few years, Leftism has become increasingly popular. A large reason for this is due to the various strategies that Leftists use to promote their agenda. The purpose of this new series of articles—which will be released sporadically over the next several weeks—is to examine these Leftist tactics.)
A few weeks ago, The Daily Wire released Matt Walsh’s documentary film What is a Woman? If you haven’t already done so, you can read my review of that film here. One line from an interview within the film struck me. Mr. Walsh asked a trans surgeon about those who believe in two biological sexes. The surgeon’s response? “Well, there are always a few dinosaurs.”
This attitude of the Left’s towards opponents of their religion is found even with regards to the reception of What is a Woman? itself. Rotten Tomatoes, perhaps the preeminent, go-to website for film and television reviews, has a system in which critic and audience scores can be viewed separately. What is a Woman? has currently an audience score of 97%. The critic score? It doesn’t exist. Specifically, although the film does have—at the time of this article’s publication—four reviews, that number is too low for the regular average to be calculated. This is also true of The Daily Wire’s film The Hyperions, which has currently an audience score of 83% and no critic score to speak of.
This is no accident. Instead, many supposed film critics refused to watch and review What is a Woman? Furthermore, those brave enough to review the film occasionally found that even their own reviews were apparently being hidden. Why does the Left continue to indulge in this tactic of ignoring opposition?
To answer this question, we must first remember that another key tactic of the Left is dehumanization (more on this in a later installment of this series). The tactic of dehumanization goes hand-in-hand with the tactic of ignoring opposition. After all, it is much easier to demonize an invisible strawman than it is to do so to a visible one.
Secondly, ignoring opposition allows for the Left’s radical ideologies to appear to be mainstream. Look at the entertainment complex. I’m sure you can remember the last time Leftists and/or Leftist positions were represented in a major film or television show. Can you say the same of Conservatives or Conservative positions? Look at the mainstream media and news. When was the last time MSNBC, CNN, and NBC had a (serious) Republican on?
The result of this is that the average liberal or Leftist possesses an extremely warped idea of what the actual public consensus is on any particular public policy. For just one example, I have been repeatedly informed by Lefty Twitter that strict gun laws—including bans on that elusive term, “assault weapons”—are favored by a supermajority of the population. However, this is abjectly false. While inaccurate, this environment is one in which Leftism thrives, and thus ignoring opposition is a preferred and common tactic of the Left.
