Why does the Left Not Understand the "Good Guy with a Gun" Principle?
It has everything to do with the philosophy of Leftism
The understanding that good guys with guns stop bad guys with guns is a core principle behind the Second Amendment, and one of the primary reasons why Republicans defend it. In the end, it was the border patrol agents in Uvalde who were the “good guys with guns” that day, as they were the ones to finally stop the shooter. This principle was also shown to be true in West Virginia Friday, where a woman took out a deranged shooter before he could kill or even hurt anyone. Yet, the Left has decreed that the Uvalde shooting debunks the “good guy with a gun” principle, mainly due to the report that several cops would not engage the shooter.
To understand this false belief, we must first grapple with the Left’s understanding of morality, laid out here in a series of four points.
Firstly—as I referenced here—a key tenant of Leftism is that the one and only moral standard and goal is this: give the government more power. “If only the government had more power, they could fix everything.” This is why all Leftist policies and bills ultimately result in the transfer of power from the individual citizen to the federal government.
Furthermore, Leftists consider the government to be the ultimate force for good, and (their) representatives of the government to be the greatest champions of goodness, to the point that Leftists idolize them. No, I mean literally.
Therefore, although generally the Left hates local police—not because they are “racist,” as they suggest, but because they protect individuals and not the government—in this case, despite the lack of any actual morality or heroics or anything objectively good shown on the part of the Uvalde cops, the Left assumes that the Right would consider these cops would be “good guys.” This is due to the repeatedly-demonstrated fact that most Leftists cannot see beyond their own worldview.
Finally, Leftists, convinced that these cops would automatically be part of the “good guy with a gun” philosophy, believe themselves to have fatally defeated it due to their irrational understanding of good and evil.
Additionally, this is why most of the Left’s arguments against the Second Amendment assume that its purpose in codifying the right to sell, purchase and own firearms was intended for either hunting or stopping crime—but mainly hunting. The Left does not make the correct assessment that the purpose of the Second Amendment was in truth to make sure that citizens would have the ability to protect themselves from the government: this is due once again to the fact that Leftism embraces government as the ultimate force for good, and so most Leftists do not understand why or how citizens would want or need to take up arms against it. After all, to take up arms against the government, according to Leftism, would be be immoral. This is why the average Leftist—not counting the Leftist leaders who seek power for themselves at any cost—wants to abolish or nullify the Second Amendment.
